Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi has officially unveiled the Redmi A2 & A2 Plus in India, successors to the popular Redmi A1 series. These budget-friendly phones, available from May 23, come with notable improvements, including a new chip and the latest Android 13 Go edition software.
The Redmi A2 and A2 Plus sport the same leather-textured back design, with the only distinction being the A2 Plus’s additional rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. Both devices are billed as splash-resistant, equipped with corrosion-proof ports, rubberised seals, and a dedicated microSD card space. They are available in three appealing colours: Sea Green, Calming Aqua Blue, and Classic Black.
The Redmi A2 and A2 Plus feature a 6.52-inch 720p display (with a 120Hz touch sampling rate), encased in a water drop-style notch, identical to the Redmi A1 series. The duo is powered by MediaTek’s upgraded Helio G36 chipset, with up to 4GB of RAM and up to 64GB of storage, expandable up to 1TB. Both phones come equipped with Android 13 Go, a lighter version of Android tailored for entry-level smartphones.
For photography, the smartphones flaunt a dual-camera setup with an 8MP main sensor on the rear and a 5MP front-facing camera for selfies, consistent with the Redmi A1 series. Adding to the attractive features, a 5000mAh battery with 10W micro-USB charging support is in place, promising 32 days of standby and up to 32 hours of video playback on a single charge.
Prices for the Redmi A2 begin at Rs 5,999 for the 2GB/32GB variant, with the 2GB/64GB model priced at Rs 6,499, and the 4GB/64GB version at Rs 7,499. The Redmi A2 Plus is available in a single 4GB/64GB variant, priced at Rs 8,499.
Xiaomi has teamed up with ICICI Bank, HDFC, and Axis Bank to provide instant discounts of Rs 300 and Rs 500 on certain models, effectively dropping the starting price to Rs 5,999. Additionally, Xiaomi is providing a free one-year extended warranty worth Rs 599 for a limited period and commits to servicing 100% of pin codes across more than 1,500 service centres, including at-home service for senior citizens.
Anuj Sharma, Chief Marketing Officer, Xiaomi India, shared his optimism about the new launch, “The all-new Redmi A2 series is packed with meaningful features. We are confident that value-conscious consumers, who want to upgrade to newer tech, will find the best solutions in our latest offerings at an honest price. Building on the success of Redmi A1 series and backed by Redmi’s quality, we are hopeful of an equally successful innings for Redmi A2 series.”
